At Nant-y-Parc Primary School, we recognise that some of our pupils may have caring responsibilities at home. A young carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 who regularly helps to care for a family member or friend who has a disability, physical illness, mental health difficulty, additional learning needs, or an issue with substance misuse.

Young carers often take on responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. These may include:

• Helping with household tasks such as cooking, cleaning or shopping

• Providing physical support and assistance with mobility

• Supporting with personal care needs

• Collecting prescriptions or helping to manage medication

• Looking after younger brothers or sisters

• Providing emotional support to a family member

• Helping with communication or interpreting information

• Assisting with appointments or day-to-day organisation

Many young carers do not realise that they are young carers. While caring for someone can be a positive experience, it can also bring additional challenges which may affect wellbeing, attendance, learning, friendships and participation in school life.

At Nant-y-Parc Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that young carers are recognised, valued and supported. We strive to create an inclusive environment where pupils feel safe discussing their circumstances and accessing help when needed. Through early identification and effective support, we aim to ensure that all young carers can enjoy school, achieve their potential and fully participate in all aspects of school life.

 

How We Support Young Carers

We can offer:

• Pastoral support and regular check-ins

• Access to wellbeing activities and emotional support

• Support with attendance and engagement where appropriate

• Opportunities to participate in clubs, activities and enrichment experiences

• Signposting and referrals to specialist Young Carers Services

• Partnership working with families and external agencies to secure the best outcomes for pupils

Our designated Young Carers Leads are Miss K. Nelson and Mr O. Evans. They work closely with pupils, families and external professionals to ensure that young carers receive the support they need both within school and at home.

If you believe your child may be a young carer, or if your family is affected by any of the circumstances outlined above, please get in touch. All discussions will be treated with sensitivity, respect and confidentiality.

 

Our Young Carers Support Pathway

1. Information is shared with the Young Carers Leads.

2. An initial meeting takes place with the pupil to discuss their circumstances and identify any support needs.

3. Appropriate support and assistance are offered within school.

4. With parental consent and the pupil's agreement, a referral may be made to the local Young Carers Service.

5. The Young Carers Service completes an assessment of need.

6. A follow-up review is held to ensure that appropriate support is in place both within school and through external services.
