Rights Respecting School
Rights Respecting School Award
Nant-y-Parc is a GOLD Rights Respecting School

What is a Rights Respecting School?
A Rights Respecting School is a place where all pupils can feel confident and it encourages them to use their voice.

Together young people and the school community learn about children’s rights, putting them into practice every day. The Award is not just about what children do but also, importantly, what adults do. In Rights Respecting Schools children’s rights are promoted and realised, adults and children work towards this goal together.

There are four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school; wellbeing, participation, relationships and self-esteem. The difference that a Rights Respecting school makes goes beyond the school gates, making a positive impact on the whole community.

-
Children are healthier and happier
-
Children feel safe
-
Children have better relationships
-
Children become active and involved in school life and the wider world
The impact of the award
Independent research and feedback from schools show that the Award has a profound impact on children and young people, and the school as a whole. When the principles and values of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) are introduced and reinforced throughout school life, children and the wider school community benefit.
Evidence suggests that these benefits include:

-
Pupils develop a long-term commitment to values such as social justice and inclusion
-
There is a reduction in bullying and discriminatory behaviour among children
-
Pupils enjoy and feel safe at school
-
Pupils feel included and valued
-
Pupils’ wellbeing and emotional resilience is improved
-
Pupils’ engagement in the school and their own learning is improved
-
Pupils’ attainment is improved, and the attainment gap between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged pupils is narrowed
-
Pupils are more engaged in their local and global communities as ‘active citizens’
At Nant-y-Parc Primary School, we continuously strive to uphold the highest standards in promoting children’s rights and embedding them across all aspects of school life. In July 2017, we were proud to be awarded the Bronze Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRS). We subsequently achieved the Silver and Gold Awards, reflecting our ongoing commitment to children’s rights.

We remain dedicated to maintaining and building on this achievement, and we are due to be re-assessed in October 2025 as we continue our journey to ensure every child’s rights are recognised, respected and celebrated.
Our School Charter
We have created a school charter with four articles. These articles link to our school rules that are displayed in all classes. On the charter it evidences the responsibilities pupils, staff and parents have to ensure that each article is respected.
